| Problem | State Analysis is a model-based systems and software engineering methodology developed to support the Mission Data System, a reference architecture for real-time embedded control systems. Specification Tools and Requirements Methodology (SpecTRM) is an off-the-shelf systems engineering development environment for assisting the specification of software-intensive, safety-critical systems. The SpecTRM tool appears to be appropriate for capturing State Analysis models and software design. Supporting State Analysis with SpecTRM will help reduce the cost and risk associated with the specification, design, and implementation of NASA?s increasingly complex systems by providing an integrated environment for requirements capture, system modeling, and software specification. |
| Objective | The objective of this proposed research infusion task is to use SpecTRM to capture the systems and software engineering information produced during the application of State Analysis to the MDS Project. The use of SpecTRM on the MDS Project will significantly improve the accessibility and the navigability of the State Analysis models and other artifacts as well as the traceability of these artifacts to and from the high-level mission requirements and constraints. The net result will be an in-crease in system safety and a decrease in the time and cost associated with the systems engineering and software specification tasks. |
