Infusion of Requirements Assistance into CEV IV&V Validation Activities

Problem Requirements validation and verification activities performed at the NASA IV&V Facility require extensive manual labor with no automated support for evaluating the properties identified in the WBS. Recent research has shown positive results in the effectiveness of utilizing automated tools which use natural language (NL) analysis techniques for evaluation. Requirements Assistant (RA) utilizes NL analysis techniques by allowing for input data on key concept areas for analysis. These key concept input files can correspond with the information provided in System Reference Models as developed from Operational Concept documents. This allows the analyst to validate that the requirements contained in System Requirements Documentation are captured completely, consistently and clearly.
Objective The goal of this research infusion project is to instill automated assistance provided by RA into IV&V validation activities. This infusion of automated analysis can reduce the time required to perform the validation while increasing the effectiveness of the analysts performing the validation activities. RA has been proven to identify key issues on both a flight software specification document and an architecture design document previously analyzed manually at the IV&V Facility. RA assisted in identifying key issues consistent with IV&V manual analysis and identified additional issues as well.
