Dates September 2004 - September 2005
Problem The findings of a recent Assessment Team, documented in the IV&V Facility Transition Plan, identify a deficiency of organized, systematically collected IV&V metrics. Determination of an effective Common Data Repository (CDR) for NASA IV&V that is compatible with the definition of an overall IV&V facility process currently being identified/developed by the Transition Team is essential to satisfy the findings of this recent Assessment Team. Additionally, many of the Strategies identified in the NASA IV&V Facility's Strategic Plan's Goals, in particular A, B, F, and G, need a CDR as their foundation. This DDF proposal will develop the data dictionary required to support the ultimate development of the CDR.
Objective The objective of this project is to achieve optimal site-wide efficiencies and savings by developing a data dictionary that can then be used to fully define and populate the CDR. The CDR should be designed to incorporate existing databases to the extent practical by utilizing data warehousing and data mart concepts. Some of these ideas are expressed in the summer 2003 Data Warehouse Project paper written by three NASA IV&V employees, Wesley Deadrick, Phillip Merritt, and Aaron Wilson, entitled "Data Warehouse Project." Before any repository can be implemented, a global Common Data Dictionary (CDD) must be created. This dictionary is at the core of any CDR initiative. The CDD will be prepared using a five-step plan:
  1. Identify all NASA IV&V core process areas (data domains) and their POCs.
  2. Collect information about existing NASA IV&V data in core process areas.
  3. Interview subject/activity experts to 'fill-in-the-blanks' in areas not currently defined.
  4. Consolidate data from 1 and 2 and review for completeness/consistency. Deliver CDD for review and approval.
