Technology Infusion of SDA into the MOD Software Development Process
Point of Contact Brian O'Hagan

Dates December 2007 - June 2008
Problem Any MOD software developed for mission use after 1/1/2008 must adhere to MOD's new Software Management Plan (SMP) which complies with the NASA Procedural Requirements (NPR) 7150.2 Software Engineering Process and the associated NASA standards. This SMP calls for the use of new software processes and procedures likely resulting in additional overhead from the following:
  • All software teams to use the new processes & procedures = increased time and cost
  • Additional training for inexperienced personnel ? New hires, or no relevant process experience
  • Strict adherence to SMP process and NASA requirements
    • Increased administrative and clerical requirements
    • Increased metrics collection requirements
    • Increased interaction between different software team roles
Objective SDA will ensure MOD software projects are routinely and efficiently constructed in compliance with NPR 7150.2. Throughout the software lifecycle SDA automatically collects information, process metrics and project status on details of activities performed by the software team. SDA provides a standard framework for MOD to capture objective information on software process execution that will be used as a baseline to make process improvement decisions. SDA also automatically captures direct and indirect artifact information throughout the lifecycle obviating the need for this information to be recreated during CMMI assessments.
