Problem Requirements analysis as performed by an IV&V analyst requires the evaluation of requirements for ambiguity, completeness, traceability, correctness and testability. Performing this analysis for the IV&V analyst is a tedious, time consuming task. This analysis is performed by a manual review of a specification document one requirement at a time without an automated tool to assist in the analysis. The need exists within this facility to provide an automated tool to assist the IV&V analyst in performing requirements analysis on NASA requirement specification documents. A search on the IV&V tools website identified 4 potential tools available to IV&V analysts. The descriptions provided for the tools currently available provide an analyst with the capabilities to browse, manage reviewing and evaluating criteria, record evaluations, tracing and report generation. They do not provide any method of automating the analysis to provide feedback to an analyst of potentially problematic requirements.
Objective Research and identify current tools available that utilize natural language analysis. Evaluated each of the tools identified to determine their capabilities in regard to being utilized at the IV&V Facility. Determine if there is a current tool that meets our needs and can be utilized within the facility by analysts, if there is a tool that can be modified to meet our needs, or if the IV&V Facility should pursue development of a new tool to meet our needs.
