Dates December 2008 - September 2009
Problem NASA guidelines for acceptable levels of risk exposure are necessary to determine both required software assurance level and required software system reliability. Research will focus on historic use of risk exposure levels and associated software assurance levels associated with the variety of NASA software application areas. Although the NASA Software Assurance Standard provides software assurance level guidance based on value, assurance level criteria should be clarified by adding a consideration for the probability of loss and by adding additional normalized, detailed examples. This project will help NASA advance towards a better understanding and more consistent use of assurance levels. This project will also help NASA better define required reliability based on risk exposure. Overall the plan is quickly focus our limited software assurance resources where they are needed.
Objective The goal is to provide a desktop application to help software teams make a consistent evaluation of required software assurance level (including cost) and required software reliability.
